Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) has some scientific basis for its use in supporting circulation, although evidence is still limited and not robust. The primary compound of interest in watermelon is L-citrulline, a non-essential amino acid found in high concentrations, particularly in the rind. L-citrulline is a precursor to L-arginine, which is a substrate for nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, a molecule that plays a key role in vasodilation and thus improves blood flow.

Several small-scale clinical studies and animal experiments have demonstrated that ingestion of watermelon or watermelon juice can increase plasma L-citrulline and L-arginine levels. This, in turn, leads to enhanced NO production and mild improvements in blood vessel function and arterial stiffness, particularly in populations with mild hypertension or prehypertension.

However, most studies use relatively high doses or concentrated extracts, and the clinical significance for general "poor circulation" remains modest. Watermelon is not a replacement for medical treatment of circulatory disorders but may offer supportive benefit due to its NO-boosting properties. Traditional medicine systems do not strongly feature watermelon as a remedy for circulation, so its use is driven primarily by current scientific exploration of its biochemical constituents rather than a history of traditional use.
