Evidence supporting the use of: Salidrosides
For the health condition: Circulation (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Salidroside is a bioactive compound primarily found in Rhodiola rosea, a traditional adaptogenic herb used in various systems of herbal medicine, especially in Russia, Scandinavia, and parts of Asia. Traditionally, Rhodiola extracts have been used to enhance stamina, reduce fatigue, and support overall vitality, which may indirectly relate to improved circulation or cardiovascular function. However, the direct historical use of salidroside or Rhodiola specifically for "poor circulation" is not well documented in traditional texts. Most references pertain to its use for fatigue, altitude sickness, and resilience against physical and mental stress.
On the scientific front, there are preclinical studies indicating that salidroside can have vasoprotective effects, such as improving endothelial function, reducing oxidative stress, and possibly enhancing microcirculation in animal models. Some studies have shown that salidroside may improve blood flow and protect vascular tissues from damage due to hypoxia or oxidative injury. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically targeting "poor circulation" are lacking, and the evidence remains preliminary. Thus, while the traditional use of Rhodiola for related symptoms exists, the evidence supporting direct use of salidroside for poor circulation is limited, warranting a moderate evidence rating.
