Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Procyanidol, more commonly referred to as procyanidins or proanthocyanidins, are a class of polyphenolic compounds found abundantly in plants such as grape seeds, pine bark (notably in the supplement Pycnogenol®), and cocoa. There is moderate scientific evidence supporting the use of procyanidins for improving poor circulation, particularly in the context of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and capillary fragility. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have found that standardized extracts rich in procyanidins can reduce symptoms such as leg heaviness, edema, and discomfort in people with venous disorders. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant activity, strengthening of capillary walls, and modulation of vascular tone by enhancing nitric oxide availability.

For example, a 2012 meta-analysis by Liu et al. reviewed several studies and concluded that procyanidin-rich extracts (e.g., from grape seed and pine bark) demonstrated statistically significant improvements in venous function and reduction in leg swelling compared to placebo. However, the quality of studies varies, with some limitations in sample size and standardization of extracts. While more research is needed to fully confirm long-term efficacy and safety, the current body of evidence justifies the use of procyanidins for supporting circulation, especially in cases of mild to moderate venous insufficiency.
