Peony (Paeonia spp.), particularly the root, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for improving circulation and treating conditions related to "blood stasis," which is often associated with poor circulation. In TCM, peony root—especially that of Paeonia lactiflora ("white peony") and Paeonia suffruticosa ("mudanpi" or "tree peony")—is believed to "invigorate the blood," "dispel stasis," and "alleviate pain." Historical texts often mention the use of peony in formulas intended to promote blood flow and address gynecological and circulatory disorders.

From a scientific standpoint, there is limited direct clinical evidence supporting the use of peony specifically for poor circulation in humans. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that peony root extracts possess anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and vasodilatory properties, which could theoretically support vascular health. However, these effects have not been robustly demonstrated in high-quality human trials specifically targeting circulation.
