Ligustilide is a phthalide compound primarily found in Angelica sinensis ("Dong Quai") and Ligusticum chuanxiong, both of which are widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Historically, these herbs have been used to "invigorate blood," "promote circulation," and address conditions associated with blood stasis, such as menstrual disorders and poor peripheral circulation. The traditional use of ligustilide-containing herbs for circulation is well-documented in classical Chinese medical texts and remains common in contemporary herbal practice, especially in formulas prescribed for cardiovascular and gynecological health.

Scientific research has begun to explore ligustilide's pharmacological properties, with some in vitro and animal studies suggesting vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. However, direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for poor circulation in humans is lacking. Most available studies focus on isolated compounds or crude extracts rather than standardized ligustilide, and human trials are sparse. Thus, while there is a growing scientific interest in its mechanisms, the primary justification for its use in circulation-related conditions remains traditional rather than scientifically validated at this time.
