Javanese Turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza), also known as Temulawak, has a long history of use in traditional Indonesian (Jamu) and Southeast Asian medicine. In these traditional systems, Javanese Turmeric is used for a variety of health concerns, including improving circulation and alleviating symptoms associated with "poor blood flow," such as fatigue and cold extremities. The rationale for its use often draws on the warming and "blood-moving" properties attributed to many members of the ginger family in traditional medicine.
However, while there are some in vitro and animal studies highlighting the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective effects of Javanese Turmeric and its constituents (such as xanthorrhizol), there is very limited scientific evidence specifically supporting its use for improving circulation in humans. Most available studies do not directly assess blood flow or circulation, but rather focus on other pharmacological effects. Therefore, the use of Javanese Turmeric for poor circulation is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than robust clinical or mechanistic evidence. Human studies specifically evaluating its efficacy for circulation are lacking.
