Hawthorn (Crataegus species) has a long history of traditional use for cardiovascular conditions, but in recent decades, its effects on circulation—particularly poor peripheral and cardiac circulation—have been increasingly supported by scientific studies. The active constituents in hawthorn, such as oligomeric procyanidins, flavonoids, and triterpene acids, are believed to improve endothelial function, dilate blood vessels, and enhance coronary blood flow. Clinical trials, especially in Europe, have demonstrated that standardized hawthorn extracts can improve symptoms and exercise tolerance in mild to moderate heart failure, a condition characterized by impaired circulation. Meta-analyses suggest that hawthorn may reduce symptoms like shortness of breath and fatigue, which are linked to poor circulation. Additionally, hawthorn appears to have mild vasodilatory and antioxidant effects, which can support overall vascular health.
However, most of the strongest evidence is related to heart failure and not specifically peripheral vascular disease. Still, the mechanisms—improved vasodilation and cardiac output—are relevant to general circulatory support. The European Medicines Agency acknowledges hawthorn’s use for temporary relief of mild cardiac symptoms, supporting its traditional and scientific relevance. Safety is generally good, though hawthorn can interact with other heart medications.
