Evidence supporting the use of: Ginkgo flavones
For the health condition: Circulation (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Ginkgo biloba, and specifically its flavone glycosides (ginkgo flavones), has been investigated for its effects on circulation, particularly in cases of poor peripheral blood flow and cerebrovascular insufficiency. Scientific studies suggest that Ginkgo extracts can enhance microcirculation by promoting vasodilation and decreasing blood viscosity. Clinical trials, mostly using standardized Ginkgo biloba extracts (containing both flavone glycosides and terpene lactones), have shown some benefit in improving symptoms associated with poor peripheral circulation, such as intermittent claudication and Raynaud’s phenomenon, as well as cognitive symptoms linked to vascular insufficiency.
The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant effects, inhibition of platelet-activating factor, and improvement of endothelial function, all of which can contribute to better blood flow. However, results across studies are mixed, with some meta-analyses showing modest benefits and others finding results that are not statistically significant. The majority of clinical evidence comes from studies with standardized extracts, so it is difficult to attribute effects solely to flavones rather than the complex mixture in Ginkgo.
Overall, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting the use of Ginkgo (including its flavones) for improving poor circulation, especially in peripheral vascular disorders, but the effects are generally modest and more research is needed to clarify its specific role and efficacy.
