Scientific studies indicate that capsaicinoids activate transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) receptors, leading to the release of vasodilatory neuropeptides such as substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). This mechanism can result in localized increases in blood flow and warmth when applied topically, which has led to the development of capsaicin creams for symptomatic relief in certain circulatory issues like peripheral neuropathy.
Some small human and animal studies have suggested that capsaicin intake or topical application may improve peripheral circulation, reduce blood pressure, and enhance endothelial function. However, the evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and variability in dosages and formulations. There is also some epidemiological evidence linking dietary chili pepper consumption to improved cardiovascular health outcomes, but causality is unclear.
