Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bioflavonoids, a diverse group of plant-derived compounds often found in citrus fruits, have traditionally been used and scientifically studied for their potential benefits on vascular health and circulation. The justification for their use in supporting circulation stems from both traditional practices and a growing body of scientific research. Bioflavonoids, particularly subclasses such as diosmin, hesperidin, and rutin, have demonstrated vasoprotective and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory and clinical studies. They are thought to strengthen capillaries, reduce capillary permeability, and improve venous tone. These effects can be beneficial in conditions associated with poor circulation, such as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and hemorrhoids.

Several randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have reported modest improvements in symptoms like leg swelling, heaviness, and discomfort in people with CVI when treated with specific bioflavonoid formulations (notably micronized purified flavonoid fraction, MPFF, which contains diosmin and hesperidin). However, the evidence is not uniformly strong across all bioflavonoids, and the term "bioflavonoid (unspecified)" is broad, as not all bioflavonoids have been equally investigated or shown efficacy. The overall quality of evidence is moderate, with some methodological limitations in studies and a need for further high-quality research. In summary, while specific bioflavonoids have scientific backing for supporting circulation, the evidence for general or unspecified bioflavonoids is weaker, justifying a modest rating.
