Evidence supporting the use of: Beet nitrate
For the health condition: Circulation (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Beet nitrate, primarily sourced from beetroot, has garnered scientific attention for its potential to support circulatory health, particularly in individuals with poor circulation. The key bioactive component is dietary nitrate, which is converted in the body to nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide is a vasodilator, meaning it relaxes and widens blood vessels, thereby improving blood flow and reducing blood pressure. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses support the efficacy of beetroot juice or beet nitrate supplementation in improving vascular function and lowering blood pressure, especially in populations with hypertension or endothelial dysfunction (Lidder & Webb, 2013; Siervo et al., 2015).
These effects are thought to be most pronounced in individuals with compromised vascular health, rather than in healthy young adults. Some clinical studies have reported improvements in measures like flow-mediated dilation (FMD), arterial stiffness, and exercise tolerance in people with peripheral artery disease or other circulatory disorders. However, while the evidence is robust for blood pressure reduction, studies on broader aspects of "poor circulation" (such as symptoms related to peripheral vascular disease) are promising but less abundant. Overall, the use of beet nitrate for supporting circulation is strongly supported by contemporary scientific research, justifying its inclusion in dietary strategies for managing poor circulation.
