Evidence supporting the use of: Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate
For the health condition: Circulation (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate (AAKG) is a compound commonly used in sports supplements, especially those aimed at improving circulation and blood flow. The scientific rationale behind its use is based primarily on the role of L-arginine as a precursor to nitric oxide (NO), a molecule that causes vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) and can potentially improve blood flow. Alpha-ketoglutarate is thought to enhance the bioavailability of arginine. Some small clinical studies and preclinical research suggest that arginine supplementation can improve endothelial function and increase nitric oxide production, leading to modest improvements in circulation, especially in individuals with endothelial dysfunction. However, the evidence for AAKG specifically, as opposed to L-arginine alone, is limited and mixed. Most studies have been conducted with L-arginine, and results in healthy individuals are inconsistent, with some showing no significant effect. There is insufficient high-quality, large-scale clinical evidence to firmly establish AAKG as an effective treatment for poor circulation. Therefore, while the use of AAKG for this purpose has a basis in scientific reasoning, the strength of the evidence is weak, and its effectiveness remains unproven for improving poor circulation.
