Achyranthes, particularly Achyranthes aspera, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), for supporting circulation and addressing conditions related to poor blood flow. In Ayurveda, the herb is considered to have properties that stimulate blood circulation and is sometimes used in formulations intended to treat circulatory disorders, varicose veins, and rheumatism. Similarly, in TCM, Achyranthes bidentata is believed to “invigorate the blood” and is used to alleviate blood stasis and promote healthy circulation, especially in cases involving joint pain and menstrual issues.
Scientific evidence for these uses, however, is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Achyranthes may exhibit anti-inflammatory, vasodilatory, or antithrombotic effects, which could theoretically support circulatory health. However, these studies are preliminary, and there is a lack of rigorous clinical trials in humans to substantiate its efficacy for improving circulation or treating related disorders. Therefore, while the traditional rationale for using Achyranthes for circulation is well documented, high-quality scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence supporting its use can be considered modest.
