Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Prebiotic blends, which typically include ingredients such as inulin, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), and other non-digestible fibers, have been researched for their potential impact on chronic diseases, including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The rationale for using prebiotics in COPD stems from emerging evidence on the gut-lung axis, a concept describing how gut microbiome health can influence lung function and inflammation.

Some small-scale clinical studies and animal models suggest that prebiotics may modulate systemic inflammation, enhance immune responses, and improve respiratory outcomes by promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. These changes could, in theory, result in reduced exacerbations or improved quality of life for COPD patients. For example, a few pilot studies have noted that prebiotic supplementation can decrease markers of inflammation relevant to lung disease.

However, the direct evidence supporting the use of proprietary prebiotic blends specifically for treating or supporting COPD is still limited. Most studies are preliminary, with small sample sizes and variable formulations. There are no major clinical guidelines that currently recommend prebiotic blends as a standard treatment for COPD. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and early evidence, the overall quality and quantity of supporting data is modest, resulting in an evidence rating of 2 out of 5.
