Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been studied for their potential roles in supporting patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD). The scientific rationale is based on omega-3’s anti-inflammatory properties, which may theoretically benefit the chronic airway inflammation characteristic of COPD. Some small clinical trials and observational studies have indicated that higher dietary intake or supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce markers of airway inflammation, improve nutritional status, and possibly enhance quality of life in people with COPD. For example, a few studies have shown improvements in exercise capacity and reduced systemic inflammation in patients supplemented with omega-3s. However, the evidence remains limited and mixed; many studies have small sample sizes, are short in duration, or do not show significant clinical benefit in terms of lung function or exacerbation rates. Major clinical guidelines do not currently recommend routine omega-3 supplementation specifically for COPD management. In summary, while there is some scientific basis and preliminary data to support omega-3 use in COPD, robust, high-quality evidence is lacking, and its use remains adjunctive rather than established therapy.
