Evidence supporting the use of: Luteolin
For the health condition: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Luteolin is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in various fruits, vegetables, and medicinal herbs. Its potential use in supporting or treating Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is primarily justified by emerging scientific evidence, largely from preclinical studies. Luteolin exhibits notable anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects, which are highly relevant to COPD pathogenesis—characterized by chronic inflammation and oxidative stress in the airways. In vitro and animal studies have shown that luteolin can reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, inhibit the activation of inflammatory cells, and decrease oxidative damage in lung tissues. For instance, research published in International Immunopharmacology (2017) and European Journal of Pharmacology (2019) demonstrated that luteolin attenuates lung inflammation and remodeling in experimental models of COPD. The proposed mechanisms include downregulation of NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways, which are central to inflammatory processes in COPD.
However, human clinical trials investigating luteolin supplementation for COPD are extremely limited or absent, and existing studies are small-scale or preclinical. Therefore, while the scientific rationale is promising and supported by laboratory data, there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to recommend luteolin as a primary or adjunctive therapy for COPD at this time. The current evidence base justifies a moderate (2/5) rating, reflecting preclinical promise but a lack of robust human data.
