Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flavonoids are a large group of polyphenolic compounds found in many fruits, vegetables, and plant-based foods. Their use in supporting or treating Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is justified by some scientific evidence, although that evidence is limited and not of the highest quality. Flavonoids have been shown in preclinical and some clinical studies to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects, which could be relevant in COPD, a disease characterized by chronic inflammation and oxidative stress in the airways. Small clinical trials and observational studies suggest that higher dietary intake of flavonoids is associated with improved lung function and reduced risk of COPD exacerbations. For example, certain subclasses of flavonoids, such as flavan-3-ols and anthocyanins, have been linked with slower decline in lung function in epidemiological research. However, most studies focus on dietary patterns rather than isolated flavonoid mixtures, and there is a lack of large, high-quality randomized controlled trials directly testing flavonoid supplementation in COPD patients. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some supportive data, the evidence is not robust enough to make strong clinical recommendations. More research is needed to clarify efficacy, optimal dosing, and safety.
