Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Dwarf lilyturf (Ophiopogon japonicus), known as "Mai Men Dong" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been used historically for respiratory ailments, including symptoms related to chronic cough, dryness of the throat, and wheezing. In TCM, it is considered to "nourish the yin" of the lungs and is commonly included in herbal formulas aimed at moistening lung tissue and alleviating chronic respiratory discomfort. There is a long record of its use in classical texts for these purposes, which includes conditions that may overlap with what is now classified as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

While preclinical studies have suggested that extracts of Ophiopogon japonicus may have anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating properties, the direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy and safety specifically in COPD patients is limited. Most published studies are in vitro or animal-based, with very few well-designed clinical trials available. As such, its use for COPD is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than modern clinical data. More rigorous, controlled human studies are needed to validate its therapeutic potential for COPD.
