Evidence supporting the use of: Boerhavia diffusa
For the health condition: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Boerhavia diffusa, commonly known as "Punarnava," is traditionally used in Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems for respiratory conditions, but its use for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is primarily based on traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation. In Ayurvedic texts, Boerhavia diffusa is described as having anti-inflammatory, expectorant, and bronchodilatory properties, which are believed to help in managing symptoms like cough, breathlessness, and mucus production associated with chronic lung conditions. A few preclinical studies suggest that Boerhavia diffusa extracts may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which theoretically could benefit COPD patients by reducing lung inflammation and oxidative stress. However, clinical research specifically evaluating its efficacy in COPD patients is very limited or lacking. No large-scale, well-designed human trials have confirmed its effectiveness or safety for COPD treatment. As such, while the traditional use is established, scientific evidence remains minimal and largely indirect. The rating of 2 reflects the presence of traditional use with some preclinical support, but insufficient human data to recommend it confidently for COPD management.
