Baicalin, a flavonoid compound extracted from Scutellaria baicalensis (commonly known as Chinese skullcap), has been investigated for its potential therapeutic effects in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Scientific studies, primarily preclinical in nature, have demonstrated that baicalin exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties, which are relevant to the pathophysiology of COPD. Animal models of COPD have shown that baicalin administration can reduce airway inflammation, decrease oxidative stress, and inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6. Some in vitro studies also suggest that baicalin may protect lung epithelial cells from cigarette smoke-induced damage and suppress mucus hypersecretion.

Despite these promising findings, clinical evidence in humans remains very limited. As of mid-2024, there are only a few small-scale clinical trials, and most available data come from cell culture and animal research. Systematic reviews highlight the need for well-designed randomized controlled trials to establish efficacy and safety in COPD patients. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale for baicalin’s use in COPD based on preclinical evidence, the level of support is modest (rated 2/5) due to the lack of robust clinical data.
