Baicalein is a flavonoid compound derived from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. There is a growing body of preclinical evidence suggesting that baicalein may have beneficial effects in the context of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), although robust clinical validation is lacking.

Experimental studies have shown that baicalein possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-fibrotic properties, which may be relevant in COPD—a disorder characterized by chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and airway remodeling. In vitro and animal model studies demonstrate that baicalein can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α and IL-6), reduce oxidative stress, and attenuate lung tissue damage. For example, several rodent studies have reported improved lung function and reduced inflammatory cell infiltration after baicalein treatment in COPD models induced by cigarette smoke or lipopolysaccharide exposure.

However, clinical evidence in humans is very limited. There are no large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials evaluating baicalein for COPD. Most data come from cell-based or animal research, and a few small pilot studies in humans, sometimes using multi-herb formulas that include baicalein-containing extracts. Thus, while there is a plausible scientific rationale based on preclinical findings, the current evidence supporting baicalein’s use for COPD in humans is weak, and more rigorous clinical trials are needed to establish its efficacy and safety.
