Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Aster species have a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Chinese herbal medicine, where certain species (such as Aster tataricus) are known as "Zi Wan" and are used for respiratory ailments. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) texts describe Aster tataricus as an herb that helps to "transform phlegm" and "relieve cough," often in combination with other herbs to address symptoms similar to those seen in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), such as chronic cough and sputum production. However, while these uses are well-documented in traditional settings, there is little to no high-quality clinical research specifically validating the efficacy of Aster for COPD in modern, evidence-based medicine. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest possible anti-inflammatory and expectorant effects, but these findings are preliminary and have not translated into robust clinical evidence for COPD. As such, the use of Aster for COPD is primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than scientific validation, and the available scientific evidence supporting its use for COPD is weak or lacking.
