Evidence supporting the use of: Dandelion
For the health condition: Cholesterol (high)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) has been used in traditional herbal medicine for a variety of health conditions, including as a digestive aid and a diuretic. Its use for supporting or treating high cholesterol is rooted mainly in traditional practices, particularly in European and Asian herbal medicine. Traditionally, dandelion roots and leaves have been consumed as teas or extracts with the belief that they help cleanse the liver and support metabolic health, which indirectly was thought to influence blood lipid profiles, including cholesterol levels.
Scientific studies on dandelion’s effects on cholesterol are limited and mostly preclinical. Some animal studies suggest that dandelion extracts may lower total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, possibly due to antioxidant compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids. For example, research in rats has shown that dandelion leaf and root can reduce cholesterol and lipid accumulation in the liver. However, there are very few clinical trials in humans to substantiate these effects or to confirm safety and efficacy for this specific use. As such, while traditional use exists, the evidence base is weak and does not meet the standards of modern clinical validation.
In summary, dandelion is traditionally used to support cholesterol health, but current scientific evidence is insufficient, and its use for this purpose should be considered with caution and not as a replacement for established medical therapies.
