Cordyceps, a genus of parasitic fungi used in traditional Chinese medicine, has been investigated for its potential effects on lipid metabolism, including cholesterol regulation. Preclinical studies, mostly in animals, have shown that cordyceps extracts may reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, while sometimes increasing HDL cholesterol. These effects are thought to be due to compounds such as cordycepin and polysaccharides, which may influence lipid metabolism, enhance antioxidant activity, and reduce inflammation.
A limited number of small-scale human clinical trials and observational studies have reported modest improvements in cholesterol profiles among participants given cordyceps supplements. For example, some studies in patients with hyperlipidemia or metabolic syndrome have shown reductions in total cholesterol and LDL after supplementation. However, these studies often have methodological limitations, such as small sample sizes, short durations, or lack of rigorous controls.
While traditional use of cordyceps in Asia has focused more on vitality, stamina, and kidney or lung health, modern research has begun to explore its potential cardiovascular benefits. The current scientific evidence for cordyceps in cholesterol management is promising but preliminary—far from conclusive, and not yet supported by large, high-quality randomized controlled trials. Therefore, cordyceps should not be relied upon as a primary therapy for high cholesterol, but may be considered as a complementary approach pending further research.
