Black seed (Nigella sativa) has been traditionally used for a variety of ailments, but in recent years, scientific research has explored its potential role in supporting healthy cholesterol levels. Several clinical studies and meta-analyses have investigated black seed supplementation, particularly its active component thymoquinone, for lipid-lowering effects. These studies have found that black seed oil or powder may modestly reduce total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol, and triglycerides, while sometimes increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol.
For example, a 2016 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in Phytotherapy Research found that Nigella sativa supplementation significantly reduced total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol compared to placebo. Another 2020 meta-analysis in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology confirmed these findings, noting that black seed supplementation could be beneficial as an adjunct to conventional therapy, especially in people with mild to moderate dyslipidemia.
However, the magnitude of these effects is generally moderate, and the quality and size of the studies vary. Most trials to date have been small and of short duration, and there is heterogeneity in the dosages and forms used (oil, powder, extract). Safety profiles have generally been favorable, with few adverse effects reported.
In summary, there is scientific evidence supporting the use of black seed for cholesterol management, but it is not as robust or consistent as for pharmaceutical therapies. Its use may be justified as a complementary approach, pending further large-scale studies.
