Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Goldthread refers to several species within the Coptis genus, particularly Coptis chinensis, which has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Goldthread contains the alkaloid berberine, which has demonstrated antimicrobial properties in laboratory studies. Historically, Goldthread has been used in TCM to treat various "damp-heat" disorders, including diarrhea and dysentery, which are symptomatic of cholera-like illnesses. There are records from the 19th and early 20th centuries indicating that Goldthread was used for gastrointestinal infections in both Chinese and Western herbal traditions, often in the context of treating severe diarrhea rather than cholera specifically.

However, while berberine (a key component of Goldthread) has shown inhibitory effects against Vibrio cholerae (the bacterium causing cholera) in vitro and in some animal studies, clinical trials directly supporting its efficacy in treating cholera in humans are extremely limited or lacking. Most evidence supporting Goldthread's use for cholera is thus based on traditional practices and historical reports rather than on robust scientific validation. Accordingly, the evidence rating is low, and modern medical guidelines do not recommend Goldthread as a primary or adjunctive treatment for cholera.
