Evidence supporting the use of: Chloride
For the health condition: Cholera
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5
Chloride is scientifically validated as a critical component in the treatment of cholera, specifically as part of oral rehydration therapy (ORT). Cholera, caused by Vibrio cholerae, leads to severe watery diarrhea and rapid loss of fluids and electrolytes, including chloride, sodium, and potassium. Without prompt replacement of these lost electrolytes, patients can quickly become dehydrated, develop metabolic acidosis, and die.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend oral rehydration solutions (ORS), which are balanced mixtures of glucose, sodium, potassium, and chloride. Chloride, typically included as sodium chloride and potassium chloride, is essential to restore plasma chloride levels, maintain acid-base balance, and support normal cellular and organ function. Evidence from numerous clinical trials and field studies over the past five decades has demonstrated that ORS containing chloride dramatically reduces mortality and complications in cholera patients.
The efficacy of ORS is so established that it is considered one of the most important medical advances of the 20th century. The inclusion of chloride is based on physiological understanding of electrolyte loss in cholera and direct clinical evidence. Thus, the use of chloride for cholera is supported by high-quality, consistent scientific evidence.
