Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cassia fistula (also known as the golden shower tree) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani for a variety of ailments, including digestive issues and as a mild laxative. There are records in some ethnobotanical literature indicating its use in the management of diarrhea and dysentery, conditions often associated with cholera-like symptoms. However, direct references to its use specifically for cholera are sparse and mostly anecdotal. The rationale in traditional systems may be due to its purgative effects, which were sometimes thought to help "cleanse" the digestive tract during gastrointestinal infections. Scientific studies evaluating the efficacy of Cassia fistula against cholera or the causative agent Vibrio cholerae are extremely limited. A few in vitro studies have examined the antibacterial properties of Cassia fistula extracts, but there is no robust clinical or preclinical evidence supporting its use specifically for cholera treatment. Current medical guidelines for cholera focus on oral rehydration therapy and antibiotics, not herbal remedies. Thus, while Cassia fistula has a minor traditional basis for use in diarrheal illnesses, there is insufficient scientific validation for its use in cholera specifically.
