Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Arisaema amurense, commonly known as the Chinese cobra lily or Amur jack-in-the-pulpit, has a documented history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, its processed tuber (often referred to as "Tian Nan Xing") is used to treat a variety of conditions, predominantly those involving phlegm, cough, and convulsions. Some traditional materia medica texts also list its usage for gastrointestinal complaints, including those characterized by severe diarrhea and vomiting, which are symptoms present in cholera. However, there is no rigorous clinical evidence or controlled scientific study specifically validating its effectiveness against Vibrio cholerae infection or cholera symptoms. The use for cholera is therefore based on empirical tradition rather than modern pharmacological or clinical research. Moreover, Arisaema species can be toxic if not properly processed, and their use is typically limited to prepared forms under professional supervision. The evidence supporting its use for cholera is weak and primarily anecdotal, as reflected in the low rating above.
