Arisaema (commonly spelled as Arisaema, and known as "cobra lily" or "jack-in-the-pulpit") is a genus used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In some traditional texts, species like Arisaema erubescens ("Arisaema") are reported to have been used for various ailments, including respiratory and digestive conditions. There are historical references in Ayurvedic and TCM literature that suggest dried or processed tubers of Arisaema may have been used to alleviate symptoms associated with severe gastrointestinal disturbances, which, in the pre-modern context, could include diseases like cholera. However, these uses are based on traditional belief and empirical practice, not on modern clinical evidence or scientific studies. There are no robust pharmacological or clinical trials supporting the efficacy or safety of Arisaema for the treatment or support of cholera. Additionally, the raw tubers of Arisaema contain calcium oxalate crystals and can be highly irritating or toxic unless properly processed, which further limits its practical use. Therefore, while Arisaema has a minor mention in some traditional medicine systems for gastrointestinal problems, there is very limited evidence, and its use for cholera specifically is not scientifically substantiated.
