Rating (out of 5): 2

Polygonatum, commonly known as Solomon's Seal, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is considered a tonic herb and is often used to nourish yin, moisten dryness, and support lung and kidney health. In the context of TCM, symptoms such as "chills" can sometimes be interpreted as signs of internal coldness or deficiency syndromes, for which warming and nourishing herbs like Polygonatum may be employed. Classic materia medica texts, such as the Shennong Bencao Jing and later compilations, mention Polygonatum for general debility and to restore depleted vitality, but they do not specifically highlight it as a primary remedy for chills. Instead, it is included in broader formulas aimed at overall vitality and balance, which may incidentally address chills if they are related to underlying deficiencies.

There is currently a lack of modern scientific studies directly examining Polygonatum's effect on chills as defined by Western medicine (i.e., as a symptom related to fever, infection, or hypothermia). Most contemporary research focuses on its adaptogenic, immunomodulatory, or anti-inflammatory properties. As such, scientific validation for the use of Polygonatum specifically for chills is minimal, and its use for this purpose remains rooted in traditional practice rather than evidence-based medicine.
