Evidence supporting the use of: Earthworm
For the health condition: Chills
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Earthworm, known as "Di Long" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been used for centuries in East Asian herbal practices. In TCM, Di Long is categorized as a substance that clears heat, unblocks channels, and promotes movement, sometimes being included in formulas for fever, convulsions, or restricted movement. The application of earthworm for "chills" specifically is less directly documented, but it may be indirectly referenced in the context of treating fever and associated conditions where chills and fever alternate, as described in some classical texts. However, there is little to no direct reference to earthworm being used solely or primarily to treat chills in either the TCM literature or other traditional systems. From a scientific perspective, there is no robust clinical evidence or pharmacological research supporting the use of earthworm extract or preparations for treating chills as a symptom. Most modern research on earthworm focuses on its purported anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, or neuroprotective properties, rather than effects on body temperature regulation or the treatment of chills. Consequently, the rating is low, and its use for chills remains primarily a traditional one with scant direct evidence.
