Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) have been used in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for various ailments, including to "warm" the body and treat symptoms like chills. The warming property is attributed to the essential oils in cloves, particularly eugenol, which is thought to stimulate circulation and promote a sensation of warmth. In folk remedies, clove tea or clove oil has been used for conditions where chills are present, often as part of broader treatment for colds or fevers.

However, there is scant scientific evidence directly supporting the use of cloves for treating chills as a symptom. The available modern research mostly focuses on clove's antimicrobial, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties, not its ability to affect body temperature or specifically alleviate chills. No randomized controlled trials or systematic reviews have validated this use. Thus, the justification for using cloves for chills is primarily traditional, and the overall evidence supporting its efficacy for this indication is very weak, relying on anecdotal or historical reports rather than clinical data.
