For the health condition: Chills
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Bur-Reed (genus Sparganium), particularly the rhizome known as Sparganii Rhizoma (San Leng in Traditional Chinese Medicine), has been used in various traditional herbal formulations. In the context of treating "chills," its use is based primarily on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) principles, where it is believed to "invigorate blood," "dispel blood stasis," and sometimes "resolve masses." Chills in TCM are often associated with stagnation or impaired circulation, and herbs like Bur-Reed may be included in complex formulas to address the underlying syndrome, not the chills directly as understood in Western medicine. There is, however, little to no direct scientific evidence supporting Bur-Reed's efficacy in treating chills as a standalone symptom. Modern pharmacological studies have focused on its potential anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and anti-coagulant effects, but none have specifically validated its use for chills. Therefore, its use for this indication remains rooted in traditional theory rather than clinical trials or biomedical research.
