Rating (out of 5): 2

Borneol is a bicyclic monoterpene traditionally used in Chinese medicine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), borneol (known as "Bing Pian") is used as an aromatic substance believed to "open the orifices," promote the movement of Qi, and dispel pathogenic factors. It is commonly included in herbal formulas for conditions characterized by chills, fever, and obstruction of consciousness. The rationale in TCM is that chills are often a manifestation of external pathogenic invasion (such as "wind-cold"), and aromatic agents like borneol are thought to help expel these pathogens and restore balance.

However, there is minimal scientific evidence to support the use of borneol specifically for treating chills as understood in Western medicine (i.e., the sensation of coldness often associated with fever or infection). Most modern research on borneol focuses on its pharmacological activities such as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and neuroprotective effects, but not directly on its ability to relieve chills. Therefore, its use for this purpose remains grounded in traditional practice rather than scientific validation.
