Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Black Nightshade (Solanum nigrum) has a long history of use in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and various folk practices across Africa and South Asia. In these systems, Black Nightshade is sometimes used to alleviate fevers, as well as symptoms that accompany them such as chills and shivering. The rationale in traditional contexts is often based on the plant’s purported antipyretic (fever-reducing) and anti-inflammatory effects. Decoctions or infusions of the leaves or berries are sometimes administered to "cool the body" or "reduce internal heat," which may indirectly address chills as a symptom of fever. However, there is little to no direct scientific research specifically examining Black Nightshade for the treatment of chills. Most of the available studies focus on its general antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects, and even these are limited and primarily preclinical (animal or in vitro studies). There is insufficient evidence to conclude that it is effective or safe for managing chills specifically. As a result, its use for chills is justified primarily by tradition rather than by scientific validation, and the evidence supporting this application is weak.
