Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bishop's Weed (Trachyspermum ammi, also known as Ajwain) has a long history of use in traditional systems of medicine, especially in Ayurveda and Unani, for the management of chills and related symptoms. In these traditions, Bishop's Weed is considered to have 'warming' properties and is often used in formulations to help dispel cold from the body. The seeds are thought to stimulate circulation and promote sweating, which are believed to help in reducing chills and fevers. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys mention its use as a remedy for chills, colds, and fevers, often administered as a decoction or infusion.

However, there is a lack of high-quality scientific studies specifically examining the efficacy of Bishop's Weed in treating chills. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional knowledge rather than clinical trials. Some pharmacological studies suggest Bishop's Weed has antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties, but these do not directly address its use for chills. Thus, while its use for chills is justified by tradition and historical practice, there is limited modern scientific validation for this specific indication.
