Evidence supporting the use of: Artemisia (unspecified)
For the health condition: Chills
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Artemisia species (such as Artemisia annua and Artemisia absinthium) have been used traditionally in several cultures to address symptoms associated with chills, often in the context of treating fevers, malaria, or general "cold" conditions. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qinghao (Artemisia annua) has a long history of use for "summer heat with fever," which may include chills. Similarly, in various folk medicines, Artemisia species were used as remedies for febrile illnesses, which typically present with alternating fever and chills.
Scientific validation, however, centers on the use of Artemisia annua for malaria, with artemisinin as the active compound. While chills are a symptom of malaria and can be alleviated as the infection is treated, there is no robust scientific evidence that Artemisia directly treats chills outside of its anti-malarial action. The traditional use likely arose from observation of symptom relief during malaria treatment. Other Artemisia species have even less evidence for treating chills specifically. Overall, the use of Artemisia for chills is best described as traditional, with a low-to-moderate quality of supporting evidence, primarily historical rather than scientific.
