Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Artemisia herba-alba, commonly known as white wormwood, has a long history of use in traditional medicine across North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. In these traditional systems, it has been used for a variety of ailments, including fevers and chills. The rationale behind its use for chills is linked to its perceived "warming" properties and its role in treating symptoms associated with cold and flu-like illnesses. However, the scientific literature does not provide robust clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of Artemisia herba-alba specifically for chills. Most modern studies on Artemisia herba-alba focus on its antimicrobial, antimalarial, or antioxidant activities, with some research supporting its use against malaria—a disease that features chills as a prominent symptom. Despite this, direct clinical trials or pharmacological studies validating its use for the symptomatic relief of chills are lacking. Therefore, while its use for chills is documented in traditional medical texts and folk practices, the evidence supporting this is anecdotal and not rigorously substantiated by scientific research.
