Terpenoids, also known as isoprenoids, are a large and diverse class of naturally occurring organic chemicals derived from five-carbon isoprene units. Their use in the context of chest pain, particularly in traditional medicine, is largely associated with herbal remedies and essential oils. Historical texts from traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and various folk medicine systems have included terpenoid-rich plants (such as camphor, eucalyptus, and certain mints) in formulations intended to relieve symptoms of chest congestion, tightness, or pain, often through topical application or inhalation. The purported mechanisms are usually related to their anti-inflammatory, mild analgesic, or vasodilatory effects. However, direct evidence from controlled clinical trials supporting the use of terpenoids specifically for chest pain (as opposed to general respiratory symptoms or musculoskeletal pain) is sparse. The scientific literature provides some support for the anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory properties of specific terpenoids, but not enough to robustly validate their use for chest pain. Therefore, their use for this indication is primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific validation.
