Evidence supporting the use of: Shiny-Leaf Prickly Ash
For the health condition: Chest Pain
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Shiny-Leaf Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum nitidum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, especially in China and parts of Southeast Asia. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), various species of Zanthoxylum have been used to "move qi", dispel wind, and alleviate pain, including chest pain (often described as "chest obstruction" or "xiong bi"). The bark and root are the main parts used, typically in herbal formulas aimed at promoting circulation and relieving pain. However, the evidence supporting its use for chest pain is largely anecdotal and based on historical texts rather than rigorous clinical trials or modern pharmacological studies.
There are limited modern studies exploring the direct effects of Zanthoxylum nitidum on chest pain or cardiovascular conditions. Some laboratory research has investigated its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, but these findings are preliminary and do not specifically address chest pain related to angina or heart disease. Thus, the use of Shiny-Leaf Prickly Ash for chest pain is rooted in traditional practice, with little robust scientific validation to date.
