Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Anamu (Petiveria alliacea) is a medicinal plant widely used in traditional medicine across Central and South America, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa. Historically, it has been used for a broad range of ailments, including pain, inflammation, infections, and respiratory issues. In some traditional healing systems, Anamu has been employed to alleviate chest pain, often related to its perceived anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Folk remedies may involve decoctions or infusions of the root or leaves for this purpose.

However, scientific validation for Anamu’s efficacy specifically in treating or supporting chest pain is extremely limited. Most available research has focused on its antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro or in animal models. While these general properties could theoretically contribute to symptom relief in some cases of chest pain (e.g., pain associated with inflammation or infection), there is a lack of direct clinical trials or rigorous studies supporting its use for chest pain in humans. The rating reflects that while there is historical, traditional use, there is little empirical evidence to justify or quantify its effectiveness for this indication.
