Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Seleno methionine is a selenium-containing amino acid commonly used as a dietary supplement. There is some scientific interest in its potential to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy, primarily due to selenium’s antioxidant properties. A small number of clinical trials and preclinical studies suggest that selenium supplementation, including seleno methionine, may help reduce chemotherapy-induced toxicity—especially in the context of cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity and mucositis. However, the evidence is limited and mixed. Some studies report reduced side effects, such as lessened kidney or gastrointestinal damage, while others find little to no benefit. The mechanisms proposed include selenium’s ability to reduce oxidative stress and modulate immune responses, possibly protecting normal cells during chemotherapy.

It is important to note that most studies have small sample sizes, variable dosages, and different forms of selenium, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions. There are also concerns about potential interactions with chemotherapy agents and the risk of selenium toxicity at higher doses. While seleno methionine is occasionally used in clinical practice for this purpose, major oncology guidelines do not currently recommend routine use of selenium supplements to reduce chemotherapy side effects due to insufficient high-quality evidence. More large-scale, randomized controlled trials are needed to clarify its safety and efficacy in this context.
