Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

IP-6 (inositol hexaphosphate, also known as phytic acid) is a naturally occurring compound found in high-fiber foods such as grains and legumes. Its use alongside chemotherapy has been primarily investigated for its potential to reduce side effects and enhance the efficacy of cancer treatments. Preclinical studies, mostly in vitro and in animal models, suggest that IP-6 may have antioxidant and immune-modulating effects, which could theoretically help protect normal cells from oxidative damage induced by chemotherapy. Some research also indicates that IP-6 might inhibit tumor growth and enhance the effectiveness of certain chemotherapeutic agents.

However, clinical evidence in humans is limited. A handful of small-scale clinical trials have reported that IP-6 supplementation may improve the quality of life and reduce some chemotherapy-related side effects (such as fatigue and low white blood cell counts) in cancer patients, particularly those with breast cancer. For example, a 2010 randomized pilot study (Grases et al.) suggested some benefit in reducing side effects, but the sample size was small and the study had methodological limitations.

Major oncological and medical organizations do not currently endorse the use of IP-6 as a standard adjunct to chemotherapy due to insufficient large-scale, high-quality clinical evidence. While the rationale for its use is based on preliminary science, more robust human trials are needed to determine its safety and efficacy. Thus, the level of scientific validation is low to moderate, meriting a 2 out of 5 on the evidence scale.
