Hedyotis diffusa, also known as Oldenlandia diffusa or Bai Hua She She Cao in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been investigated for its potential to support chemotherapy, particularly by reducing side effects such as immunosuppression, gastrointestinal toxicity, and inflammation. Preclinical studies (mainly in vitro and in animal models) suggest that extracts of Hedyotis diffusa may have anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant effects, and some research indicates it may enhance the efficacy of certain chemotherapeutic agents while reducing their adverse effects. These studies propose mechanisms such as downregulation of inflammatory cytokines, protection of normal tissues, and modulation of immune responses.
However, clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most human studies are either small-scale, poorly controlled, or involve Hedyotis diffusa as part of complex herbal formulas, making it difficult to attribute effects specifically to this herb.
