Beta-caryophyllene is a dietary cannabinoid found in many essential oils, such as clove, black pepper, and cannabis. Recent scientific studies have investigated its potential to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy. Preclinical research, primarily in animal models, has demonstrated that beta-caryophyllene can exert anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and gastroprotective effects, which are relevant to the side effects often experienced during chemotherapy (e.g., pain, inflammation, and gastrointestinal disturbances). For example, studies have shown that beta-caryophyllene activates the CB2 cannabinoid receptor, which is known to modulate immune responses and inflammation without eliciting the psychoactive effects associated with CB1 receptor activation.
