American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) has been investigated for its potential to alleviate certain side effects of chemotherapy, especially cancer-related fatigue. Several clinical studies, including randomized controlled trials, have demonstrated a moderate benefit in reducing fatigue among cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. For example, a prominent double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (2013) found that 2,000 mg of American ginseng daily over 8 weeks significantly improved fatigue compared to placebo in cancer patients. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, anti-inflammatory effects, and antioxidant properties of ginsenosides (the active compounds in ginseng). While the evidence is strongest for fatigue, there is less robust data for other chemotherapy-related side effects such as nausea or neuropathy. Most clinical research has focused on standardized, high-quality American ginseng extracts, and the results may not be generalizable to all ginseng products. Safety profiles in these studies have generally been favorable, with few serious adverse events reported. In summary, while American ginseng is not a replacement for conventional symptom management in oncology, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting its use to reduce cancer-related fatigue during chemotherapy. Further research is necessary to clarify its effects on other side effects and to establish long-term safety.
