Alpha-glycosyl isoquercitrin (AGIQ) is a water-soluble derivative of quercetin, a well-known flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The rationale for its use in supporting chemotherapy patients is based on its ability to reduce oxidative stress and potentially mitigate some chemotherapy-induced side effects, such as peripheral neuropathy and mucositis. A small number of preclinical and clinical studies have explored quercetin and its derivatives, including AGIQ, in this context. For example, a Japanese clinical trial (Kawakami et al., 2017) suggested that AGIQ supplementation reduced symptoms of oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy in colorectal cancer patients, likely due to its antioxidative and neuroprotective effects. Additionally, in vitro and animal studies indicate that AGIQ is more bioavailable than standard quercetin, potentially enhancing its therapeutic benefits. However, the overall evidence base remains limited: there are only a handful of small-scale human trials, and larger, well-controlled studies are needed to conclusively establish efficacy and safety for this specific use. There is also no strong tradition of AGIQ use in this context, as it is a relatively recent development compared to other flavonoids. In summary, while there is preliminary scientific support for AGIQ as an adjunct to chemotherapy for reducing certain side effects, the evidence is modest (rated 2/5), and more research is warranted before making strong clinical recommendations.
