For the health condition: Cataracts
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Phyllanthus species, particularly Phyllanthus amarus and Phyllanthus niruri, are traditionally used in various systems of medicine, such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, for a variety of health conditions, including liver disorders, diabetes, and kidney stones. There are anecdotal and historical records suggesting the use of Phyllanthus species for supporting eye health, including cataracts, in some folk medicine traditions. However, the direct evidence for this use is weak and not well documented in major ethnobotanical sources. The traditional rationale, where it exists, is often based on the plant’s purported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to be generally beneficial for eye health and the prevention of cataract formation. Nonetheless, there is a lack of robust clinical or preclinical studies specifically investigating Phyllanthus for the prevention or treatment of cataracts. There are limited in vitro or animal studies on Phyllanthus extracts showing antioxidant effects, which might theoretically slow cataract development, but such evidence is indirect and insufficient for scientific validation. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent for using Phyllanthus in the context of eye health, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for cataracts is minimal and should be considered preliminary at best.
