Cetylated Fatty Acids (CFAs), which are a group of naturally occurring fatty acids that have been esterified with cetyl alcohol, are marketed as dietary supplements for joint health and have been studied for their potential effects on cartilage damage and osteoarthritis. The proposed mechanism involves improving synovial membrane health, lubricating joints, and reducing inflammation, which could theoretically benefit individuals with cartilage damage.

A limited number of clinical studies suggest that CFAs, administered orally or topically, may improve joint function, reduce pain, and enhance mobility in patients with osteoarthritis—a condition characterized by cartilage degeneration. Notably, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Journal of Rheumatology (2002) found that topical CFA application improved knee range of motion and stair-climbing ability in osteoarthritis patients over 30 days. Other small trials and open-label studies have reported improvements in joint comfort and function, but these studies often include mixed populations and do not focus exclusively on cartilage repair or regeneration.

It is important to note that most of the available evidence is low to moderate in quality, with small sample sizes and short durations. There is no direct evidence that CFAs repair cartilage or reverse cartilage damage; rather, they may provide symptomatic relief and functional improvement in conditions where cartilage damage is present. Larger, high-quality trials are needed to establish efficacy and clarify mechanisms.
